Old theory: The Star Trek franchise has become too permanently associated with hopeless nerdity to ever be commercially viable again.

New theory: The world has been secretly filled with a huge number of closet Star Trek fans all this time, all waiting for the right moment to shed their self-loathing and strut their stuff in public. And now it's here.

UPDATE: I'm switching 50% of my loyalty to Vu's alternative theory:

alternate theory: appropriate amounts of 'hot young talent' will perk up any aging franchise, spurring non-nerds to quickly gain superficial knowledge of the mythology as a way of displaying authenticity.
But only 50%; there's some genuine nostalgics mixed in with all these Johnny-come-latelys.
